1.14 Update Preparations

We’re a little behind schedule for the 1.14 update. We are now looking at launching in early-mid June.

UPDATE: Important Notice

Based on early tests of the upgrade process, it is possible that some builds may be damaged. We’ll try to avoid this as much as possible… but we can’t offer any guarantees.

We recommend checking all of your builds, maybe taking pictures in case there is minor damage, and we’ll also be saving copies of certain builds. We shouldn’t need any of this, but we’ll have it just in case.

Chests may also be damaged. In particular, double-chests near chunk borders have a very small possibility of being lost – if you have any items in these, you may want to consider moving them, just to be safe. You can see chunk borders by pressing F3+G while in-game.

In general, try to save whatever copies/pictures you can.
Everything should be fine, we’ll take every precaution and save backups, but it may help to recover quicker after the update is completed.

We are expecting to have the server down for maybe two weeks. As previously announced, we’ll have a temporary server up during this time.

We’ll have both survival AND minigames running on the temporary server. We’ll also be using it to test a few new ideas, plugins, and gameplay changes – some will be noticeable, some won’t. We are also hoping to have ALL magic enchantments available on the temporary server! The temporary server will be Minecraft 1.14.1.

Here’s our current schedule:

By the end of May

  • Revival resource pack updated
  • Temporary Server with survival, magic enchantments, and all-new Infected minigame launched
  • Some updates to the website
  • Taking down the current server

Early June

  • Possibility of new minigames on temporary server
  • Attempt upgrade of main world
  • Finish up and test Questing
  • Finish building new roleplaying features
  • Finish building new markets
  • Finish building new spawn
  • Announce new Official Rules
  • Evaluate how the new ideas/gameplay tests worked on temporary server, determine what to bring over to main server

  • Load everything into main world
  • Test server extensively
  • Get early-game quests completed and implemented
  • Finish up any last-minute touches on new builds
  • If all goes according to plans, launch the new server!

Late June / Early July

  • Launch Chapter One of the main questline
  • Launch the Economy Overhaul (new shops, trading, and more!)
  • Launch the new loyalty system (rewarding player activity and participation in minigames)
  • New server-wide events!

Rest of Summer

  • Launch the other chapters of the main questline
  • More events, minigames, and other activities – we’re hoping to make this a regular thing

The State of Akenland: March 2019

This month, we’ve got some new features, new terrain, and an important update on TARDIS!

Warpstones has received a number of new features in the past month! Here’s a quick overview of what we’ve already added:

Warp Hearts

  • Added Warp Hearts
  • Craft from four Warp Shards, Warp Dust in corners, and an Eye of Ender in the middle
  • Once crafted, it must be charged
  • To charge, activate new warpstones while the heart is in your inventory
  • You may charge multiple hearts at the same time

Charged Warp Shards

  • Added Charged Warp Shards
  • Craft from a Warp Heart, and an Ender Pearl
  • The heart’s charge determines how many shards you get, every 10% gets you a shard (min 10% charge = 1 shard, max 100% charge = 10 shards)
  • The location you are standing while crafting, will be the location that is saved (so you can save any location)
  • Otherwise works identically to normal shards

Warp Dust

  • Chance of receiving dust is higher
  • Less dust dropped when linking a shard
  • Dust may now drop when a shard is consumed

Upcoming Warpstones features

  • Warpstone Seeds
    • Crafted from a fully charged Warp Heart, these seeds must first be warmed to bring them alive. Then, plant them and wait, and they’ll grow into a fully functional new warpstone!
  • Interstices
    • Interstices allow you to access chests, mobs, and even locations from afar – creating a bridge across the world
    • Storage Interstices allow remote access to chests
    • Entity Interstices allow warping mobs
    • We are considering ideas like warping structures, or possibly remote access to locations, maybe a form of wireless redstone too – let us know what you’d like to see!
    • Interstices will either be limited use (consumable) or require charging to use. The crafting recipes will likely involve Warp Hearts.

We recently started testing an all-new feature called quicksave. This allows you to, for the first time ever, keep your items on a PvE death! That means no more losing valuable items due to falls, creepers, or lava!

This feature is in beta testing, and you must opt-in to use it. It is not guaranteed to work at this time, and there is a small chance of permanently losing items on death. Contact Kyle to opt-in to the beta test.

How it works

Activate a warpstone (that isn’t the spawn warpstone), or sleep in a bed, to perform a quicksave. Your inventory, at this point in time, will be saved.

After you have quicksaved, you can die in PvE (any death that does not involve a player), and you will automatically retain the items that you had when you quicksaved.

If you lose an item after quicksaving, it won’t be returned to you. Similarly, if you acquired an item after quicksaving, it won’t be returned, instead it will be dropped as normal. You should quicksave after acquiring valuable items!

Quicksaves can be reused, if you die again, and still have the same items.

An update on TARDIS

As we announced in February, we are planning to retire TARDIS, in favour of the new Warpstones features and items. The plugin has a variety of issues which are impractical to fix.

We planned to gradually disable TARDIS features over three months. At this time, we have disabled TARDIS travel to biomes, players, and co-ords, TARDIS creation and upgrades (desktop theme), and room growth (ARS).

In two weeks (April 6th), it will have been two months since we made the announcement, and therefore, we will be disabling TARDIS travel entirely, as well as most commands and features. After another month (May 6th), we will be retiring the plugin altogether.

If you need to recover items from your TARDIS, please do so as soon as possible. You will still be able to access your TARDIS until May.

If you need a list of saves, or need to be warped to your saved locations, please contact Kyle in-game, on Discord, or leave a comment below. You can get a list of your saves in a variety of formats, as well as Warp Shards.

If you have TARDIS circuits, seeds, or other items, hold onto them for now – we are considering allowing you to exchange them for new Warp Items.

Let us know if you have further questions.

The State of Akenland: February 2019

We’ve got a ton going on right now, so I figured I’d give a quick overview of everything’s that’s new and coming soon to the server!

Item Overhaul & Magic Enchantments

This is a big one… read the separate blog post about it!

After the Magic Enchantments are complete, my next focus will be Questing.

We already have part of the questing system in-place, but it’s far from complete. We’ll be introducing the full dynamic questing system soon, which will include a massive number of tailoured quests, telling the stories of the world and its characters.

There will also be a Party system – multiplayer questing. Start a quest with your friends, and you’ll automatically be placed into a party. Everyone will be able to interact with NPCs as a group, and use teamwork to complete objectives.

City of Intwil Redesign

I am working to revamp the City of Intwil, to make it easier to navigate, more visually appealing, and create room for expansion.

This will be a drastic overhaul to the entire city – including Spawn, the Mall, Necrowolf Manor, the Library, and other key areas, as well as a full redesign of the terrain and road layout. If you have suggestions, please ping me in-game or on Discord!

New Warpstones Features

We have some exciting new features planned for Warpstones!

Warp Hearts will be a new, extremely powerful item. Once crafted, it must be carried through many Warpstones before it can be useful. A charged Warp Heart can be used to save any location into a Warp Shard, or even create an entirely new Warpstone!

There’s also one feature that a lot of you will be really happy to hear about – but it’s still in early planning. Here’s a hint though: it’s a PvP-friendly way to keep items on death, with a twist of Warp magic!

Economy Overhaul

This one is also in early planning, but it’s pretty cool, so here’s a little teaser.

  • Realms can create their own currency!
  • Trade between realms
  • Mail/delivery service
  • All-new shop system: more interactive, reliable, and realistic

Most of this will be introduced alongside the revamped Intwil Market District. It will serve as a place to demonstrate the new economy systems!

Changes are coming to TARDIS

As we’ve grown as a roleplaying server, and developed our lore, magic, and gameplay, it has gotten difficult to see where TARDIS fits on our server.

The following concerns have been raised by players:

  • Can be used to travel past walls/into hidden areas in the PvP regions
  • Can be used to hide stolen goods
  • Items cannot easily be stolen from TARDISes, giving an unfair advantage over those who hide their items in the PvP region
  • Can be used to enter/exit areas extremely quickly, and without much difficulty, making them hard to fight and defend against

Additionally, admins have the following concern:

  • Players can smuggle illegal items inside of TARDISes, making it hard for admins to track down items
  • The idea of a mobile base in an alternate dimension doesn’t work well when we have a massive, in many cases hand-built, overworld for players to build and explore
  • Extremely difficult to balance TARDIS gameplay with other gameplay
  • The plugin is easy to exploit, such as farming blocks from rooms
  • Stolen goods can be compressed in the Artron Condenser, making them impossible to track down
  • The plugin has a performance impact on the server
  • Parked TARDISes add clutter to towns and roads, and get in the way
  • TARDIS doesn’t fit with our lore or magic
  • None of the admins have any interest in playing with the plugin
  • TARDIS clashes with the new Warpstones gameplay

For these reasons, we will be retiring the TARDIS plugin over the next few months. We will start by blocking creation of new TARDISes, while existing players will continue to be able to use them.

Over the next three months, we will slowly turn off TARDIS features. After that, the plugin will be retired, and existing TARDISes will no longer be accessible. Please clear items out of your TARDIS in advance. We will announce dates as we get closer.

This decision was not made lightly. We feel it is best for the future of the server. We hope you look forward to the new features coming to replace it, such as Warp Hearts, Magic Enchantments, and more to be announced!

Item Overhaul & Conversion FAQ

We are in the final steps of preparing the Item Overhaul! This will bring over 30 all-new enchantments, and more ways than ever to tell your own story with personalized items.

What will be happening

We are making sweeping changes to a massive number of items on the server. Because of the way the new system works, many existing items must be converted.

You will be notified if you try to use an item that requires conversion. Bring it to the newly-opened Conversion Center at spawn, and we’ll get it sorted. The Conversion Center is located to the right of the spawn exist, next to the CTW Warpstone.

How Conversion works

The new item system is based around Levels. Every item has a level. This makes it easy to compare items at-a-glance. Item Levels range from 0-100.

When converting an item, we start by deciding what level it should be.

Player-made items
  • Levels 1-10: early survival gear
  • Levels 10-25: mid-tier survival gear
  • Levels 25-40: high-tier survival gear
  • Levels 40-60: top-tier survival gear
Lore/questing items
  • Levels 50-55: low-tier lore items
  • Levels 55-65: mid-tier lore items
  • Levels 65-80: high-tier lore items
  • Levels 80-100: top-tier lore items (ultra-rare, there will only be three in the entire world!)

Once we’ve sorted the item into one of the categories above, we look for a combination of enchantments that will bring it as close as possible to the desired level.

We’ll try to preserve the set of enchantments on the item – unless you’d prefer us to prioritize certain ones. Let us know how you want your item to perform, and we’ll try to accommodate!

Note that the old Custom Enchantments have been removed. In many cases, these enchantments will be replaced by a similar new enchantment.

What are the new Enchantments?

We know you’re all excited to try out the new Magic Enchantments! We won’t be revealing how every enchantment works, you’ll have to experiment… but here’s the names of them.

The enchantments are separated into four branches of magic. Each branch has 9 enchantments at this time.

What are the new options for personalizing items?

We’re still working on this, we’ll announce details when this part is ready to launch.

When is all this going to be available?

We are starting testing right now! The item overhaul will be rolling out over the weekend!

Please note that this is in early preview, and there may be bugs. Please ask Kyle if you have any questions.

Item Overhaul is Coming Very Soon – Early Rebalancing

In order for us to rebalance existing items in a way that is fair and consistent, we’d like to start collecting items for Conversion.

This is currently optional, but will greatly help us make balancing decisions that everyone can be happy with.

If you have enchanted items (particularly those with custom enchantments or rare enchantments), and would like to participate, you have two options:

1) Fill out an Item Conversion Form and drop off your item at the Conversion Center near spawn. We’ll hold onto your item until rebalancing is complete, and return it to you at that time.

2) If you’d prefer to hold onto your item, contact an Admin in-game, and they’ll take a copy of your item (leaving you with the original). We’ll use this copy to help determine how to balance items. If your item will require conversion, you’ll still need to bring it to the Conversion Center later on – but you can keep it for now.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks everyone!

The Banmas winter festival has begun!

Our annual winter festival, Banmas, has begun! This is our biggest Banmas festival yet, with all new events, and returning favourites.

As usual, all events are hosted by Kyle, out of the Banmas Hub at Necrowolf Manor. The hub has been decorated, as well as spawn, and the mall! Warp to the hub by talking to the NPCs at spawn, or by typing /Banmas.

Banmas 2017 Events

Advent Calendar: Every day, a new gift will be available at Necrowolf Manor! Head up the stairs and collect your daily gift!

Elytra Skiing Challenge: Can you master Elytra flight as you descend from a mountain? If you are successful, you get to keep the Elytra! Type /skiing to go to this event.

Writing Contest: The Writing Contest is back! Write a Banmas/holiday/winter-themed story, poem, or song (even a parody!), and drop it off at Necrowolf Manor. The best entries will be published and writers will be rewarded!

Building Contest: We are doing a Building Contest! Build any sort of Banmas/holiday/winter-themed structure or artwork, and show it to an online admin. You can build anything you want, anywhere in Wolfia! The best builders will receive rewards!

Scavenger Hunt: Our most popular event, the Scavenger Hunt, is back! Find chests marked with spruce trees, and collect the Banmas Cookies! Cookies can be redeemed for prizes at the end of the month.

Winter Arena: We are considering hosting an arena battle! If you are interested, tell an admin.

Fall 2017 Updates

Been a while since I’ve done a blog post here! Here’s what we’ve been working on recently…

City of Aberdeen, Eborin

Our custom roleplaying plugin, RealmsCore, has received a variety of new features! For those who are not aware, a realm represents a nation or faction in the world of Wolfia.

You can now send messages to other members of your realm with /msg realm <message…>

Realm leaders, you’re now in control! Invite and kick people from your realm, change the colour, tagline, and name of your realm, and assign titles to players.
If you have sub-realms under your rule, you can do all of this stuff to that realm too.
/realm <realm name> <invite/kick/addofficer/removeofficer> <players…>
/realm <realm name> set <color/fullname/tagline> <new data…>
/realm <realm name> title <player> <new title…>

I’m still working on a system for creating new realms. Until then, you can let me know in-game if you’d like to start your own realm.

Researcher at the Aunix temple

The next big plugin… RealmsStory is what will bring all the lore that we’ve developed, into the world.

You may notice NPCs throughout the world. You can talk to most of them, and they’ll recognize you (if you have a title/realm) and may tell you something interesting. Sometimes, you can choose a message to respond to the NPC.

These NPCs may tell you about quests you can complete, or offer help to you.
Realm leaders, you can now give orders to NPCs in your realm! Supply your guards with equipment, and ask them to follow you (they’ll follow you anywhere, even if you teleport), or guard a particular spot. They’ll fight monsters on their own, or you can tell them to attack a particular target.
Talk to Kyle to get some NPCs for your realm.

More NPC interactions will be coming soon.

The Blade of Light

New players* will notice a unique item in their inventory when they first join: The Blade of Light.

This blade, while only a wooden sword, is unique with an introductory message to our lore. It also has the player’s username and join date on it.

If you show your Blade of Light to the researcher at the library, he’ll tell you a little more about the lore.

*if you’re a returning player, and would like to get your Blade of Light, ask Kyle, he will give it to you. If you lose the blade, it can also be respawned for free.

First, the bad news: Our Magic plugin has been pushed back due to some major changes to the design of spells. It may not be ready until later this year, or possibly even early next year.

Now the good news: Spells are going to be much more flexible and useful! The new spells are made up of “words” – components of spells. Combine them in different ways to make unique spells.

For example, if you start with a Flame word, and combine it with a Projectile spell word, you’d get a fireball spell. If you added an Explosive word, the fireball would also explode on hit!

Words can be combined in any order, with different effects depending on where they are in the spell. Some words may be useless in some spells, while others may be extremely powerful.

Experimentation is key to finding effective spells. Once you’ve created a spell, it remains in your hotbar (so you can have up to 10 spells prepared at a time). You can also permanently save and share spells in books.

Warpstones – Wolfia’s unique fast travel system

Our new, unique fast travel system is now mostly complete! Warpstones provide a way to quickly return to previously visited locations around the Akenlands and beyond.

You can recognize warpstones as floating lapis and stone structures, often found near towns and points of interest. Activate one, and then return to it later with /last. You can only return to the last warpstone you’ve activated, unless you have a new magical item (detailed below).

You can also use /sethome at a warpstone near your home to permanently save it. Then, return to it at any time with /home. You can also use /spawn to return to the warpstone at spawn, in the City of Intwil.

While using warpstones, you may discover a unique blue dust. This Warp Dust can be used as an alternative to Lapis Lazuli, however it has a far more useful purpose. Craft four Warp Dust into a Warp Shard, and then carry it to a warpstone to transform it into a useful magic item, allowing you to save the location of the warpstone in the shard itself. You can use at any other warpstone later, or trade it to other players.

Warp Dust drops rarely when activating a warpstone (other than your home and spawn warpstone), so you will need to activate many warpstones to collect enough dust for shards. This rarity, combined with the usefulness of shards, makes it a highly desirable item in the realms of Wolfia.

Note: Custom item textures are included in our resource pack, Revival. You must have the resource pack to see the appropriate textures for the new warp items. Download the pack here, or by typing /revival on the server.

Server Update – 1.12

Minecraft 1.12 just got pushed back to Wednesday June 7th. Spigot, our server software, is expected to be available on Thursday, so we will most likely update on that day.

The update process should be pretty smooth, we’re not expecting any major changes or complications. Lots of behind-the-scenes tweaks planned though, in preparation for future plugins!

Our new custom Realms plugins are working very well so far. Here’s a quick overview of each one: Continue reading Server Update – 1.12

Five Years of Wolfia + Future Plans (March 2017 Updates)

Five years. It’s been a long time since Wolfia was first started in March 2012. While we’ve recently relaunched the server and started welcoming new players, the world has been in existence for five years now.

We’ve got plenty of new faces and some returning ones too (welcome back Walker, Agent, Mads!). Wolfia has been totally reimagined over the past few years, and is looking really good now.

Here what’s being worked on now:

I work on Intwil fairly often, mostly minor stuff. I do want to redo the Mall and Bank though. A warpstone has been added outside the Mall, in Intwil’s main square.

Gryston has also been seeing a lot of work. Vanskorch Manor is mostly finished. I will be adding a train station and cleaning up some of the landscape here.

Galvin has been doing a lot of work on Aberdeen. The Apiceedra and the new library are looking great, although there’s still a lot of stuff to be finished in Aberdeen.

Outer regions

Sholkingham (north oceans) and Runnach (south oceans) are our PvP regions (raiding and PvP allowed).

The kingdom of Yongaron (in Sholkingham) has grown, and now includes a new town, Nightfall. King CT05 is the ruler of all of Yongaron, while Jarl Flaming rules the town of Nightfall.

Meanwhile, in the south, Runnach, the Aerin Isles has fallen claim to three factions: the Thaindom of Eborin, the Kingdom of Yongaron, and the town of Grimwood.

New Server Plugins

I am developing several plugins, custom-made for the server. These are known as the Realms plugins, and help bring RPG-inspired gameplay additions to the world of Wolfia.

RealmsCore is the first one, and includes our all-new ranks system.

Here’s how it shows in chat:
The bracket color is based on the farthing that player is associated with (Waramon, Eborin, Sholkingham, Runnach).
Names can now be prefixed with titles, such as Alpha (in Waramon), Thain (in Eborin), King (in Yongaron), or any other title. These are selected by nation leaders and approved by admins.

Admins are now indicated by a +. Note that these ranks do not include permissions/powers, instead these are now given by admins, as needed. We do not have staff or builder ranks.

We are also working on custom plugins for Warpstones, Jails, Economy, Mail, and Skills/Magic. More details coming soon.
